ラテン語 infectio（染めること）から。接頭辞 in-（中へ）+ facere（作る、する）の過去分詞 fectus で「中に入り込んで作用する」が原義。affect（影響する）やdefect（欠陥）も同じ語根 -fect- を持つ。病気が体内に「染み込む」イメージ。
Infection comes from Latin infectio, which originally had the sense of staining, dyeing, or affecting something. It is related to a verb built from in- "into" and facere "to make or do," and the same root appears in affect and defect. The meaning later shifted to the idea of harmful matter entering the body and spreading through it.
