depletion は deplete + -ion で、deplete はラテン語 de-「外へ・除いて」+ plere「満たす」に由来します。complete や replete も同じ plere をもち、もとは「満ちた状態から中身を抜く」感覚なので「枯渇」が腑に落ちます。
