差し迫る、迫る
解説 Definition
impend は、重大な出来事や好ましくない事態が今にも起こりそうな状態で「差し迫る」「迫る」を意味するやや硬い動詞です。災害、危機、戦争、経済問題などについて、避けがたい切迫感や不穏な前兆を伴って述べるときに用いられます。

ラテン語 impendere 「上に垂れかかる」が語源。im-（上に）+ pend（ぶら下がる）で、もとは「頭上に掛かっている」こと。pending, pendant も同根で、そこから「差し迫る」の意味になった。
