pendingはラテン語 pendere「ぶら下がる」が語源で、現在分詞形の語感は「宙づりのまま」です。判断や処理がまだ地面に着いていない感じから「保留中」という意味になりました。語根 pend は depend, suspend にも見えます。
"Pending" comes from Latin pendere, meaning "to hang." In its original image, something pending is still hanging in the air and has not been settled yet. That is how it developed the meaning "not decided" or "still waiting." The same root appears in depend and suspend.
