necropsy は近代ラテン語 necropsia を経て、ギリシャ語 nekros「死体」＋ opsis「見ること」に由来します。autopsy と同じ -opsy を含み、necrosis も同根なので、「死体を見て調べること」から剖検の意味になりました。
"Necropsy" comes through modern Latin from Greek "nekros" meaning "dead body" and "opsis" meaning "view" or "sight." So its basic idea is "looking at a dead body." It developed into the medical term for examining a body after death. It shares its "-opsy" part with "autopsy," and the root "necro-" also appears in "necrosis."
