医学的に、体の一部から組織を小さく採取して、病気がないか調べる検査のこと。がんや感染症の診断に用いられます。
A biopsy is a medical procedure in which doctors take a small piece of tissue from the body to examine it closely. It is often used to check for diseases such as cancer or to find the cause of an abnormal result. The word can refer to both the procedure and the tissue sample itself.

biopsy はギリシャ語 bios「生命」+ opsis「見ること」からできた語です。直訳すれば「生きた組織を見て調べること」で、biology や optic と並べると、ただ切り取るのでなく生体を観察して診断する語だと腑に落ちます。
