curdle は中英語 curd「凝乳」からできた語で、反復的な変化を表す -le を伴い、「凝乳になる」が元の感覚。curd や crud と同根で、さらに古英語系の「押して固める」発想にも通じるため、液体がだま状に固まる動きがそのまま意味になっている。
