A polestar is the star that appears almost fixed in the northern sky, also called the North Star. It has traditionally been used for navigation and finding direction. The word can also mean a guiding principle or main point of focus in a more figurative sense.

polestar は pole「極・軸」と star を合わせた語で、pole はギリシャ語 polos「軸」にさかのぼります。天の軸の近くでほぼ動かず見える星だから、昔は『進む向きを決める星』という感覚で使われました。polar や Polaris も同じ pole 系です。

The word first meant the star near the celestial pole, the one that seemed almost still in the sky. Because it guided travelers, it also developed the wider sense of a guiding principle.
