Memory Tip
That hurts.
Think of ouch as the English equivalent of a quick “痛っ” when you stub a toe, touch something hot, or get a small injury. It normally stands alone as an exclamation: “Ouch!” or begins a short reaction such as “Ouch, that hurts.” The word can also respond figuratively to a cruel comment, an embarrassing mistake, or an unpleasant price. It is close to ow, but ouch often feels like a slightly fuller, more deliberate reaction. Its sound-based nature makes the painful situation itself the best memory cue.

Etymology
Ouch is an imitative interjection whose form represents a spontaneous cry of pain. It is related historically to earlier English exclamations written in forms such as ow and owch, but its deeper origin is uncertain. Because such cries can develop independently and vary greatly in spelling, no more precise word formation can be stated confidently. Its modern spelling became established as the familiar English exclamation for sudden pain.
