peppering は pepper「コショウ」に -ing が付いた形で、pepper は古英語 pipor、さらにラテン語 piper にさかのぼります。piperine や peppercorn も同根で、小粒をぱっと振りまく感覚から「コショウをする」「立て続けに浴びせる」意味が出ました。
