解説 Definition
発話や行為が、その場で何かを成立させる「遂行的な」という意味で使われる形容詞。近年は、実質がないまま人に見せるためだけに行われる、見せかけの・表面的なという批判的な意味でもよく用いられる。
Performative describes words or actions that are done mainly to create a certain effect or public image. It often suggests that the action is more for appearance than for sincere belief or real change. In academic language, it can also describe language that performs an action by being spoken.

performative は20世紀半ばに、哲学者 J.L. Austin が perform + -ative で広めた語です。perform は古フランス語 parfornir「成し遂げる」に由来し、核は「実行すること」。そのため、発話が行為を成立させる「遂行的な」という意味にも、行為が見せ方として前に出る「見せかけの」という意味にもつながります。
Performative was coined in 1955 by the philosopher J. L. Austin from perform plus the ending -ative. Perform comes through Anglo-French and Old French from a verb meaning "to carry out fully" or "complete." Austin used it for utterances that do something by being said, and later the word widened to describe actions or styles that emphasize performance itself.
