adverb

周辺的しゅうへんてき

解説 Definition

周辺的に、或いは中心からはずれた場所に。主要な部分や焦点の外側にある様子を表す。

Peripherally means in a way that is not central or most important. It can describe something connected only partly, indirectly, or at the outer edge of a subject or area. It is often used when a person or idea has only a limited role.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

まず peripheral(周辺の)を先に固め、その副詞版が peripherally と覚える。-al 形容詞→-ally 副詞の仲間で、political→politically, logical→logically と同じ型。central / centrally(中心の/中心的に)との対比で入れると定着しやすい。議論・視線・関心が本題の外側に少し触れる場面でよく使い、be involved peripherally, peripherally related などが典型。mainly は「主に」、partly は「部分的に」で、peripherally は「中心ではなく周辺で」が核。

First lock in peripheral, then just add -ly to make the adverb, like logical and logically. The key contrast is central or centrally. If something is peripherally related or someone is involved peripherally, it is connected, but not at the center.

例文

She noticed the movement peripherally.

彼女は周辺視野でその動きに気がついた。

The issue was only discussed peripherally during the meeting.

その問題は会議中、軽く触れられただけだった。

We perceived the flashing light peripherally while focusing on the screen.

画面に集中している間、点滅する光が視野の端に入った。

peripherally の語源・成り立ち Etymology

peripherally は peripheral に副詞語尾 -ly が付いた形で、語源はギリシャ語 periphereia「周囲・外周」。peri-「周りに」とpherein「運ぶ」がもとで、perimeterhemisphere と通じ、「中心ではなく周辺で」の感覚が生まれた。

Peripherally is built from peripheral plus the adverb ending -ly. Peripheral comes from Greek periphereia, meaning "circumference" or "outer edge," from peri- "around" and pherein "to carry." The word developed the sense of being at the edge rather than at the center. Related words include perimeter and hemisphere.
