本や章の冒頭に置かれる引用句や短い言葉、または記念碑・建物などに刻まれた銘文を指す名詞。作品や場所の主題、雰囲気、意図を示したり、読む人・見る人に解釈の手がかりを与えたりする。
An epigraph is a short quotation or saying placed at the beginning of a book, chapter, or other piece of writing. It usually gives the reader a mood, theme, or idea connected to the text. It can also mean a short inscription written on a building, statue, or monument in some contexts.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
graph が入る語は「書く・文字」が核。biography, autograph, graphic を知っていれば、epigraph もまず「文字で示された短い言葉」と捉えやすいです。覚えるときは場面を2つに分けると定着します。1つは book/chapter epigraph で、本や章の冒頭に置く引用句。もう1つは stone inscription のように、建物や碑に刻まれた文。どちらも「内容に先立って、上に掲げられる一言」という感覚でまとめると忘れにくいです。似た形の epitaph は墓碑銘、epigram は警句なので混同注意。
Notice the part `graph`, which appears in words about writing or words, like `autograph` and `biography`. Think of an epigraph as a short piece of writing placed before something else, often at the start of a book or chapter, or cut into stone. Be careful not to mix it up with `epitaph` or `epigram`.

epigraphはギリシャ語epigrapheにさかのぼり、epi-「上に」+ graph「書く」から成ります。もともとは「上に書かれたもの」で、碑文や巻頭の題辞を指すのも自然で、graphicやbiographyが同系です。
`Epigraph` comes from Greek *epigraphe*, from `epi-` "on, upon" and a root meaning "write." So its original sense was simply "something written on" a surface. From that, it came to be used for writing placed on a monument or at the beginning of a text; related English words include `graphic`, `graph`, and `biography`.
