記念碑、像、建物などの表面に書かれたり刻まれたりした短い文を指す。人、出来事、場所などを記念し、その意味や由来を伝えることがある。書物の冒頭に置く題辞とは対象が異なる。
An epigraph is a short inscription written or carved on a monument, statue, building, or another surface, often to identify or commemorate a person, event, or place.
