ギリシア語 epigramma にさかのぼり、epi-（上に）+ gramma（書かれたもの）から成ります。telegram や grammar と同根で、もとは碑や器物の「刻まれた文句」だったため、短く鋭い警句の意味へ育ちました。
Epigram comes from Greek epigramma, from epi- "on" and gramma "something written." It first meant an inscription written on a monument, object, or tomb. Because such texts were short and carefully phrased, the word later came to mean a brief, sharp, witty saying. It shares its root with grammar and telegram.
