dirigibleはフランス語dirigeable「操縦できる」から入り、さらにラテン語dirigere「まっすぐ導く」にさかのぼります。語根reg-は「導く・支配する」を表し、もとは「進路を指図できるもの」なので、操縦可能な飛行船を指す語になりました。関連語はdirect、regimentです。
Dirigible came into English from French dirigeable, meaning "able to be guided or steered." It goes back to Latin dirigere, meaning "to direct" or "set straight." So the word first meant something whose course could be controlled, and later it became the name for a steerable airship. It is related to direct and, more distantly, regiment.
