expository はラテン語 exponere「外に置く」に由来し、ex-「外へ」+ ponere「置く」と分けられます。つまり内容を人の前に置いて見えるようにする語で、「説明的な」という意味が自然に出ます。exposition と compose が同じ ponere の語根を含む関連語です。
Expository comes from Latin exponere, meaning "to put out" or "set forth," from ex- "out" and ponere "to place." The basic image is of putting something out where people can see it clearly.
