婚姻関係にない親から生まれた子である状態、つまり非嫡出であることを指す語。また法的・政治的・社会的な文脈では、制度や政府、主張などに正当な根拠や承認がなく、正統性を欠いていることという意味でも使われる。
Illegitimacy means a lack of legal or social acceptance as something proper, official, or valid. It can also refer, in older legal or historical use, to the state of being born to parents who were not married.
