aphorism はギリシャ語 aphorismos に由来し、apo-「離して」+ horizein「境界を定める」から成る。horizon や horize と同根で、物事の要点を短く切り分けて境界線のように示すので「格言」になる。
Aphorism comes from Greek aphorismos. It is built from apo- "off, apart" and horizein "to mark boundaries," which is also the source of horizon.
