解剖学用語で、腹腔の内側や腹部臓器の表面を覆う薄い漿膜です。臓器を保護し、摩擦を減らし、腹腔内で臓器を支える役割を持ちます。

peritoneum はギリシャ語 peritonaion に由来し、peri-『周囲』+ teinein『張る、伸ばす』から成ります。tone や tendon と同じ張る語根をもち、『内側をぐるりと張って包む膜』という像が、そのまま腹膜の意味になっています。
Peritoneum comes from Greek peritonaion. It is built from peri-, meaning "around," and a root related to stretching or tightening, also seen in words like tendon and tone.
