解剖学で、前腕をひねって手のひらを下向きにする動き、または足部が内側に倒れ込む動きを指す名詞。運動学やリハビリ、ランニングの文脈で使われ、回外との対比で説明されることが多く、歩行や姿勢の評価でも重要な概念である。
Pronation is a turning movement in which a body part rolls or rotates inward. It is often used about the foot while walking or running, or the forearm when the palm turns downward. This is a technical word used in anatomy, medicine, and sports.

pronation は supination と対で覚えるのが最短です。語尾の -ation は「動作・状態」の名詞なので、pronate する動き全体を指す語だと分かります。前腕なら「手のひらを下へ向ける」、足なら「内側へ倒れ込む」動き。ランニングでは overpronation が頻出。回外 supination が外へ返す側なら、pronation はその反対の基本動作、とセットで固定すると混同しにくいです。なお pro- を見て「前向き・賛成」の pro と結びつけると意味を外しやすいので注意。

pronation はラテン語 pronus「前かがみの、うつ伏せの」からできた pronate に -ation が付いた語です。語幹 pron- には『前へ倒れる』感じがあり、関連語に prone、pronate があり、手のひらを下へ向ける回旋という意味に結びつきます。
Pronation comes from pronate + -ation. The root goes back to Latin pronus, meaning "leaning forward" or "face downward." From that sense of turning downward, the word came to describe the movement of turning the hand or forearm so the palm faces down; compare prone and pronate.
