解説 Definition
人やその行動・動きについて、明確な目的を持ち、それに向かう意図や方向性がはっきりしていることを表します。また、行為については明確で有用な目的のために意図的に行われること、設計などについては、その目的を果たすよう意図して形づくられていることを表します。単に想定された用途に適している、または十分に役立つという意味ではなく、「fit for purpose」と同義ではありません。
Purposeful describes a person, behavior, or movement that shows clear intention and direction toward an aim. It can also describe an action deliberately carried out for a definite, useful purpose or a design deliberately shaped to serve or embody such a purpose. It does not merely mean suitable or adequate for an intended function and is not equivalent to “fit for purpose.”
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
purpose「目的」に -ful「〜を備えた」が付いた語です。目標へ迷いなく進む人や、雨水を木々へ導くよう意図して設計された庭園を思い浮かべ、「明確な目的が人の行動や物の形を方向づけている」と覚えましょう。単に用途に適しているという意味ではありません。
Combine purpose with -ful: something purposeful is visibly directed or shaped by a clear purpose. Picture someone striding straight toward a goal or a garden designed to guide rainwater to trees. The word expresses deliberate direction, not merely suitability for a function.

purposeful の語源・成り立ち Etymology
purposeful は purpose「目的、意図」と、性質や特徴を備えていることを表す接尾辞 -ful からできています。purpose は古フランス語を経て、ラテン語 proponere「前に置く、提示する」に連なる語です。目的を前に置いて進むというイメージから、明確な意図や方向性を備えたことを表すようになりました。
Purposeful combines purpose with the suffix -ful, meaning “having” or “characterized by.” Purpose entered English through Old French and is historically connected with Latin proponere, “to put forward” or “set before.” The adjective therefore describes a person, action, movement, or design characterized and directed by a clear purpose.
