A readme is a file that gives basic information about a software project, program, or folder. It usually explains what the project is, how to install or use it, and other important notes. The word is common in computing and is often written as README.

readme は英語の命令文 read me「私を読んで」からそのまま名詞化した語で、read は古英語 rǣdan「読み解く・助言する」にさかのぼります。reader や readable も同根で、「最初にこれを読めば全体の使い方が分かる」という役割が、そのまま名前になった語です。
Readme began as the English command phrase "read me" and later became a noun for a file with basic instructions. The verb read comes from Old English rǣdan, which originally had the sense of "interpret" or "advise" as well as "read." That older idea of helping someone understand fits the purpose of a readme.
