フランス語 recruter（再び育てる）からの派生で、さらにラテン語 re-（再び）+ crescere（成長する）に遡る。同根語に increase（増加）や crescent（三日月＝成長する形）がある。軍隊の兵力を「再び育て補充する」ことから新兵の意味になった。
Recruit entered English through French recruter. Its history is connected with the idea of restoring or increasing a body of people, ultimately involving Latin re-, “again,” and crescere, “to grow.” In military use, recruiting replenished the strength of an army by bringing in new personnel. The noun recruit consequently came to mean a newly enlisted person, and recruits is its regular plural form.
