フランス語 recruter（再び育てる）からの派生で、さらにラテン語 re-（再び）+ crescere（成長する）に遡る。同根語に increase（増加）や crescent（三日月＝成長する形）がある。軍隊の兵力を「再び育て補充する」ことから新兵の意味になった。
