reverb
リバーブ
解説 Definition
reverb は音が反響して残る効果、またはその音響効果を指す名詞です。日本語の「リバーブ」とほぼ同じですが、英語では音楽制作や音響だけでなく、空間に響く残響そのものにも使われます。
A lingering sound created by many closely spaced reflections in a room or other space, or an audio effect that imitates this. It is commonly added to voices and instruments in music production.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
reverb は reverberation「残響」の短縮形。音楽制作では add reverb、too much reverb のように、声や楽器音へ加える効果を指す。echo が区別できる反復音を表しやすいのに対し、reverb は反射音が重なって尾を引く響きだと覚える。
Remember reverb as the shortened form of reverberation. Picture a singer’s voice continuing briefly in a large empty hall as many reflected sounds blend together. In recording, common phrases include add reverb, natural reverb, and too much reverb. Compare it with echo: an echo is often heard as one or more distinct repetitions, while reverb is a dense, smooth tail of reflections that gives sound a sense of space. This distinction helps connect the word both to real room acoustics and to the studio effect used on voices and instruments.

reverb の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語のre(戻る)+verberare(打つ)から派生したreverberationの短縮形。音が壁にぶつかって跳ね返る様子が語源で、空間に残る音の重なりを指します。同語根語のreverberate(響く)と比較すると、音の反射イメージが明確になります。
Reverb is a shortened form of reverberation and has been used especially in audio and music contexts. Reverberation comes from Latin reverberare, “to strike or beat back,” formed with re-, “back,” and verberare, “to beat.” The history matches the acoustic image of sound striking surfaces and returning through a space. In modern usage, reverb can denote either natural lingering reflections or an electronically produced effect that simulates them.
