氷点下の霧や水蒸気が、木の枝や草、窓、金属などの表面に白く凍りついてできる氷の付着物。雪とは異なり、空気中の水分が直接こおって生じる。冬の山地や寒冷地で見られる樹氷や霜状の氷を指す語。

rime「樹氷・粗氷」は古英語 hrim「霜」に由来する語で、ゲルマン語系の「白く凍りついた霜」の語です。rhyme「韻」とは同音ですが別語源で、詩の音ではなく、霧や水分が枝や窓に凍りついてできる白い氷を表します。
Rime came through Old French from Medieval Latin rithmus, which goes back to Greek rhythmos, meaning "rhythm" or "measured flow." It is closely related to rhythm and also to rhyme, which later became the more common spelling. The meaning moved from general patterned sound to the matching sounds at the ends of poetic lines.
