seawater
海水
解説 Definition
海に存在する、塩分やさまざまな鉱物を含んだ水のこと。通常は不可算名詞として使う。
Water found in the sea, containing dissolved salt and various minerals. It is normally an uncountable noun.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
sea「海」+water「水」という透明な構成なので、seafood「魚介類」や seaside「海辺」と同じ sea- の複合語として整理すると覚えやすくなります。salt water は一般的な「塩水」、seawater は自然界の「海水」を指すのが基本です。不可算名詞なので、通常は a seawater とはせず、some seawater や seawater contains salt の形で使います。
Combine sea with water and picture the salty water in an ocean wave. Remember some seawater rather than a seawater, and connect the sea element with familiar words such as seafood and seaside.
例文
Seawater contains a lot of salt.
海水には多くの塩分が含まれている。
Do not drink seawater when you are thirsty.
喉が渇いても海水を飲んではいけない。
The pool is filled with warm seawater.
そのプールは温かい海水で満たされている。
seawater の語源・成り立ち Etymology
sea「海」と water「水」をそのまま結び付けた複合名詞です。両語とも古英語に由来し、sea は sǣ、water は wæter という形でした。英語では通常 sea water と二語にすることもありますが、seawater という一語表記も広く使われます。
This compound joins sea and water, which come from Old English sǣ and wæter. It can also be written as two words, sea water.
