subspecialty は specialty を知っていれば覚えやすい語です。specialty は「専門分野・得意領域」。そこに sub- が付くと subcategory, subsection と同じく「その下位・一段細かい」という感覚が加わるので、「大きな専門の中の、さらに絞られた専門」と取れます。医学では specialty の後に選ぶ細分領域としてよく使われ、 specialist が「専門家」、specialty / subspecialty が「分野名」だと整理すると混同しにくいです。
