swire は中英語を経て古英語 swēora「首・首筋」にさかのぼる語で、もとは分解しにくい古いゲルマン系語です。Scots の swyre や古ノルド語 svíra も同根で、丘のくびれた部分を「山の首」と見立てたので鞍部・峠を表すようになりました。
Swire goes back through Middle English to Old English sweora, meaning "neck." It is an old Germanic word, related to Scots swyre and Old Norse svira. The meaning shifted from a human or animal neck to the narrow "neck" between hills, so it came to mean a saddle or mountain pass.
