「共に」「接触する」に関係する語形成を手掛かりに、神経細胞間の小さな接点を想像しましょう。synapse に -s を付けた複数形で、発音は /sɪˈnæpsɪz/ です。
Use the Greek-based idea of things coming into contact to picture small junctions between neurons. Synapses is the plural of synapse, pronounced /sɪˈnæpsɪz/.

synapses の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語の接頭辞syn-(共に)と語根hapt-(触れる・つなぐ)に由来します。「神経同士が隣り合い、信号を手渡すように接続する」というイメージから名付けられました。関連語にはsynaptic(シナプスの)やsynergy(協力)があります。
Synapses is the plural of synapse. Synapse was created from Greek elements: syn-, meaning “together,” and a form related to haptein, “to fasten, join, or touch.” The scientific term was introduced for the functional junction at which one nerve cell communicates with another cell. Its structure therefore reflects the idea of cells coming into connection, although they are often separated by a very small gap called the synaptic cleft.
