synapse は近代科学英語の語で、ギリシャ語 synapsis「結合、接続」に由来します。syn-「共に」+ haptein「つなぐ、触れる」から成り、神経細胞どうしが“つながる場所”だと考えると意味がつかみやすいです。関連語は synaptic, haptic です。
Synapse was introduced into scientific English in the late nineteenth century from Greek synapsis, meaning “connection” or “joining.” That noun combines syn-, “together,” with a form related to haptein, “to fasten or join.” The term was chosen for the functional junction at which nerve cells communicate. Synaptic is the corresponding adjective, used in expressions such as synaptic transmission and synaptic activity.
