opportunist は opportunity の語幹に -ist が付いた語で、源はラテン語 opportunus。これは ob-「…の方へ」+ portus「港」で、元は「港へうまく入れる追い風に恵まれた」が「都合がよい」となった。opportune, opportunity が同根。
Opportunist comes from opportunity plus the suffix -ist, meaning a person connected with something. Opportunity goes back to Latin opportunus, which originally described a favorable wind bringing a ship toward a harbor.
