音楽における拍動パターンをずらすリズム技法。本来の強拍を弱拍にずらすことで躍動感を生み出す。ジャズやラテン音楽で特に重要。
Syncopation is a musical pattern in which beats that are usually weak are stressed instead of the expected strong beats. This creates an off-beat or irregular rhythm. It is common in jazz, pop, Latin, and many other styles of music.

beat（拍）と offbeat（裏拍）をセットで覚えると定着しやすい語。syncopation は「テンポが速いこと」でも「拍子が変わること」でもなく、規則正しい beat の予想を少し裏切って offbeat にアクセントを置く感覚。手拍子なら本来の強拍を外して跳ねる感じ。jazz rhythm、Latin groove、funk の説明で頻出なので、「ずらしてノるリズム技法」と使用場面ごと覚えると混同しにくい。
