失神

脳への血流が一時的に不足して起こる意識消失、すなわち失神のこと。
Syncope is a sudden, short loss of consciousness, usually called fainting. It happens when not enough blood reaches the brain for a brief time. This is mainly a medical word used by doctors or in health-related writing.

syncope はラテン語を経てギリシャ語 synkope にさかのぼり、syn-「一緒に」＋ koptein「切る」から成ります。意識が急に「ぷつりと断たれる」ことから失神を表し、音が途中で落ちる言語学の用法も同じ発想だと分かると腑に落ちます。関連語は syncopation, apocope。
Syncope came into English through Latin from Greek synkope, built from syn- "together" and koptein "to cut." The original image is of something being cut off suddenly, which led to the medical sense of a sudden break in consciousness. The same idea also appears in linguistics, where a sound is "cut out" from the middle of a word; compare syncopation and apocope.
