スペイン語 tabaco から英語に入った語で、さらにカリブ海先住民語、特にタイノ語系に由来するとされますが、もとは植物名でなく喫煙具の名だった説もあります。外来の品名がそのまま定着した語と見ると納得しやすく、tobacconist も同じ語根です。
English borrowed tobacco from Spanish tabaco. Spanish probably took it from a Caribbean Indigenous language, often linked to Taino, though some scholars think the original word may have named a smoking tool rather than the plant itself.
