A hesitation sound used while a speaker is thinking, choosing words, or feeling uncertain about what to say. As a written interjection, it can appear at the beginning of an utterance or between commas within a sentence.

The sound is normal in spontaneous conversation, but too many ums can make a prepared talk sound uncertain. Remember it as a speaking signal, not as a grammatical part of the sentence.
