覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
um は、答えを考えたり次の言葉を探したりするときの声を文字にした間投詞です。Can I, um, go home? のように文中へ挟み、普通はコンマで区切ります。uh とほぼ同じ働きですが、um は少し長く考え込む間を感じさせることがあります。会話では自然でも、発表や正式な文章では繰り返しすぎないのが一般的です。
Think of um as the sound that fills a pause while a speaker is choosing words or deciding what to say. In writing, commas often mark it as separate from the sentence: Can I, um, go home now? It is close in meaning to uh, although um can suggest a slightly longer or more thoughtful pause. The sound is normal in spontaneous conversation, but too many ums can make a prepared talk sound uncertain. Remember it as a speaking signal, not as a grammatical part of the sentence.
例文
Can I, um, go home now?
えーと、もう家に帰ってもいいですか?
It is, um, a little big.
うーん、少し大きいです。

um の語源・成り立ち Etymology
英語で、答えを考えたり言葉に迷ったりするときに出る声を文字にした間投詞です。
Um is an imitative written form of a common hesitation sound. It does not come from a longer English word and cannot usefully be divided into meaningful roots. The final nasal sound, represented by m, reflects the way speakers may keep the sound going while planning their next words. Its modern written use is especially common in dialogue, transcripts, and informal representations of speech.
