何もないとは、存在するものが全くない状態、または特定のものが一切ない状態を表す言葉です。物・情報・出来事などが皆無であることを強調するときに使われます。否定を強める表現として幅広い文脈で用いられます。

nothing は no + thing ですが、no は古英語 nān にさかのぼり、ne「〜ない」+ ān「一つ」からできています。つまり「一つの物もない」が原義で、none や nobody と見比べると、「否定+名詞」で欠如を作る英語の感覚がつかめます。
Nothing is built from no and thing, but no itself goes back to Old English nan, from ne "not" plus an "one." So the older idea was "not one thing" or "not a single thing." This same pattern appears in related English words like none and nobody.
