not は文や語句を否定して「〜でない」「〜しない」を表す基本的な副詞です。be 動詞、助動詞、do などのあとに置かれ、文全体を打ち消したり、特定の語を強く否定したりします。短縮形 n't でも非常によく現れ、英語の否定表現の中心となる語です。

not の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古英語の not は noht, nawiht にさかのぼり、「何も〜ない」という意味から発達しました。no や never と同じ否定の流れに属し、現代英語では最も基本的な否定語として定着しています。
Not goes back to Old English nawiht and noht, which originally meant nothing. The word moved from the idea of no thing to a general marker of negation. It belongs to the same broad family of negative words as no and never.
