国名Brazilはポルトガル語で、赤い染料が採れるブラジルボク（pau-brasil）に由来。brasilはラテン語「brasa（燃える炭）」から来ており、木の赤い色が燃える炭に似ていたため。関連語：Brazil（ブラジル）。
