Xmas は Christmas の省略形で、X は未知数や「消す印」ではなく、ギリシャ語 Christos「キリスト」の頭文字 chi（Χ）です。したがって意味を省いた表記ではありません。Xmas cards、at Xmas のように主にくだけた広告、カード、見出しなどで見かけ、正式な文では Christmas が無難です。
