abu は日本語「あぶ／アブ」のローマ字形がそのまま英語に入った借用語です。接頭辞や接尾辞に分ける語ではなく、日本語の虫名を音ごと取り入れているので、意味も直に「アブ」だと理解できます。つまり“日本語名がそのまま英語化した語”です。関連語は 花虻, 水虻。
