accountancy は account + -ancy で、語幹 account は古フランス語を経てラテン語 com- + putare「徹底して数える」系にさかのぼります。count や compute も同根なので、会計が「数字を数え上げ整えること」だと腑に落ちます。
Accountancy comes from account + -ancy. Account came through Old French from Latin roots linked to counting and reckoning, related to words like count and compute. The word therefore grew from the idea of carefully counting things to the organized practice of keeping financial records.
