acrylic は acrylic acid（アクリル酸）から作られた語で、その名称は刺激臭のある化合物 acrolein（アクロレイン）に関連して19世紀に作られました。acrolein の名称にはラテン語 acer「鋭い、刺激的な」にさかのぼる要素が含まれ、acrid もこの語族に属します。一方、acrobat はギリシャ語 akros「高い、先端の」に由来する別系統の語で、同根ではありません。
