ラテン語 acer（鋭い）に由来する acrolein（刺激臭のある物質）から派生。acer + ギリシャ語由来の化学接尾辞 -yl + -ic で構成される。関連語: acrid（刺激性の）、acrobat（先端で歩く人→曲芸師）。「鼻を刺すような刺激」が原義で、そこから合成樹脂の名称になった。
