Aiding is the present participle or gerund form of aid. It describes providing practical, material, informational, or emotional help that enables a person, organization, or process to accomplish something or cope with a difficult situation.

Start with aid, meaning to give support, and add -ing without changing the spelling: aid becomes aiding. The /d/ joins smoothly to the following vowel sound. aiding は aid の進行形。aid は古フランス語 aidier を経てラテン語 adiutare/adiuvare「助ける」に由来し、ad-「〜へ」+ iuvare「力を与える」と分けられる。adjutant や adjuvant と同系で、「相手に力を添える」が援助する感覚。
