keynote は古英語由来の key「鍵・中心を定めるもの」と、ラテン語 nota に由来する note「音・しるし」の複合語です。もとは曲の調を決める中心音で、そこから全体の方向を示す「基調講演」へ広がり、notation や notable も note と同根です。
Keynote is a compound of key and note. It first belonged to music, where it meant the main note that sets the key of a piece. From that sense of the central note that shapes everything else, it later came to mean the main idea or leading speech of an event.
