要石

要石とは、アーチや構造物の頂点に置かれ、全体を支える最も重要な石のことです。転じて、ある組織やシステム、計画において欠かせない中心的な要素や人物を指します。それがなければ全体が崩れてしまうほど重要な存在を表す比喩的な表現です。
A keystone is the central stone at the top of an arch that holds the other stones in place. In a wider sense, it means the most important part of a system, plan, or argument. It is often used to describe something essential that supports everything else.

key は「鍵」だけでなく「最重要の」という意味で、key person や key issue の key と同じ。そこに stone が付くので、「全体を支える決定的な石」とイメージすると定着しやすい。実物の要石だけでなく、the keystone of the system のように「外すと全体が崩れる中核」に広く使える。cornerstone と近いが、keystone はアーチの頂点で全体を締める感じが強い。なお keynote は「基調講演・基調」で別語。
