blackmail の mail は「郵便」ではなく、スコットランド語 mail「地代・貢納」で、語源は古ノルド語 mal「取り決め・支払い」。black は「邪悪な・脅しの」含みを添え、暴露を避けるために払う金から「脅迫」を意味する。関連語は mail, tribute。
In blackmail, mail does not mean post. It comes from Scots mail, meaning "rent" or "payment," from Old Norse mal, linked to agreement or payment.
