extort はラテン語 extorquēre にさかのぼり、ex-「外へ」＋ torquēre「ねじる」から成ります。原義は「ねじって外へ取り出す」で、そこから脅しや圧力で金品や自白を「むりやり絞り取る」意味になりました。関連語に torture、torque があります。
Extort goes back to Latin extorquere, from ex- "out" and torquere "to twist." Its original sense was "to twist out" or "wrench out."
