threaten は古英語 þreatnian「脅す」に由来し、名詞 þreat はもと「圧迫・群れ」の感覚を持っていました。相手に圧をかけるイメージから「脅す」へ発展。関連語は threat と、同じ印欧語根をもつ intrude。
Threaten comes from Old English threatnian. It is related to threat, whose older background includes the idea of pressure or a crowd pressing in. From that image of pressure being put on someone, the meaning developed into "to menace" or "to warn of harm."
