A blackmailer is a person who tries to get money or force someone to do something by threatening to reveal harmful or secret information. The word is used in legal, criminal, and general discussions of threats and pressure. It has a strongly negative meaning.

blackmailer は blackmail + -er「…する人」。black は古英語、mail は郵便ではなくスコットランド語で「貢納・みかじめ料」を表し、blackmail や blackmailed も同根です。つまり「黒い手紙の人」でなく、脅して金を取る人という成り立ちです。
Blackmailer comes from blackmail plus the agent ending -er, meaning "a person who does something." Here mail does not mean post; in Scots it meant a rent, payment, or tribute.
