alginate は alginic acid + -ate から成り、alginic はラテン語 alga「海藻」に由来します。-ate は「塩・エステル」を表すので、文字どおり「海藻由来のアルギン酸の塩」で、藻のぬめりから採れる物質だと分かります。alga や algae も同根です。
